Merry Christmas from Rareware Archives!
|
Posted by: Paul @ 23/12/2011 13:11:20
Here we are then ... the end of another year. Decorations are up, cupboards and fridges are stuffed with food and drink galore and a jolly fat man in a red outfit will soon be breaking into your home to leave you stuff and eat all of said food and drink.
It's been a good year all told in the world of games, although relatively quiet on the Rareware front. But, "look to the future now, it's only just begun" as Slade's song demands and cast your gaze towards 2012 where good things are on the horizon for our favourite developer. Of course, we'll be there every step of the way to cover any news that surfaces, all the while keeping our list machine (i.e. Lerako locked in a cage with only a typewriter and a bowl of water for nourishment) well-oiled and maintained to keep you entertained during the quiet spells.
On behalf of all the Rareware Archives staff I'd like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and best wishes for the new year. Regardless of your faith (or lack of it for that matter), I'd like to think that we can all come together at this time of year to celebrate and reminisce over the good stuff whilst pushing the bad bits behind the sofa where we can conveniently forget about them for a week or two.
Putting all the Christian stuff to one side (how glib to brush off the saviour's birth like that!?) I'm not overly religious and when people ask "what does Christmas mean to me?" I tend to think of it as a time for family and friends; to come together with the knowledge that while we may be separated by distance or circumstance for the rest of the year we'll always be there for each other when it counts.
I know that the site has been a lot quieter than we are used over these last few months and you all have my thanks for continuing to visit and helping to make us one of the premier Rare websites on the net. Let us all keep our fingers crossed that the next few titles out of Rare's door blow us all away with their awesome awesomeness, rather than make us roll our eyes and let out a sigh.
I'd also like to extend my thanks to all the mods (in particular to Lerako for his excellent lists) for all your hard work to not only persevere and visit the site, but help with its upkeep and content. It's often a thankless task that can really take the fun out of things but you guys continue to keep at it and give it your all. Hearty applause all round.
So, there we are then. I'm off to finish off the present wrapping and getting those last minute essentials (brussel sprouts and eggnog). Whatever your plans for the Christmas period, I hope you have a great time and stay safe. See you next year.

Win a copy of Fusion: Genesis
|
Posted by: Paul @ 08/11/2011 22:20:02
Update:
Congratulations to BlueBanjo109 who's name was plucked from our mystical hat of mystery. You win the code fella, we hope you like the game. Thanks to everyone who entered. The answer was Steve Burke.
Original story:
Fusion: Genesis is released tomorrow for the criminally cheap sum of 800 Microsoft Points. We've played it, we love it and you can expect a review soon. In the mean time the guys over at Starfire Studios have very kindly given us a copy of the game to give away to one lucky so and so. All you have to do is answer this question and the name pulled out of the hat tomorrow at 6pm London time wins the game.
Q. Who composed the soundtrack to Fusion: Genesis?
Rules:
1. The competition is open for anyone to enter. You do not need to be a member of Rareware Archives.
2. The first entry received is the one that counts. Any subsequent entries you send will not be counted.
3. Entries are to be sent to paul@rarewarearchives.co.uk
4. Entries must be received by 6pm GMT on 9th November 2011. The winner will be notified soon after.
Good luck!

Fusion: Genesis release date and price announced
|
Posted by: Paul @ 01/11/2011 15:36:59
Starfire Studios’ debut title for Xbox Live Arcade, Fusion: Genesis, is going to be released next Wednesday 9th November for the princely sum of 800 Microsoft Points. To us that is ridiculously good value for what promises to be "a twin-stick shooter with MMO elements" and we’ll definitely be downloading that as soon as the Xbox gets fired up that evening. What makes the game so promising (as well as being the reason we’re reporting on it) is that Starfire Studios is made up of ex-Rare staffers so the game is sure to possess much of the gameplay, visual and audio traits that make it a Rare game in all but name! The game’s well worth a look so at the very least go and see if the demo goes up at the same and give it a try.

Competition winners announced!
|
Posted by: Paul @ 01/11/2011 11:26:27

The results are in and the winners are chosen! Thanks to everyone for their entries, we had some really good ones but rising to the top of the bubbling cauldron were the entries from Alex Kupse and Ellie Coyle who both win themselves a copy of Grabbed By The Ghoulies on Xbox Live. Alex sent in some truly wonderful B-K: N&B vehicles and Ellie had us both scared and chuckling with her scary story "Banjo-Kaghoulie". We'll be in touch soon with your prize guys, well done to you both.
Check out our Spooky Showroom below that features our Banjo-Kazooie: Nut's & Bolts Vehicle Entries, there's Motzhand from the original Banjo-Kazooie title, a visually-disadvantaged Cyclops with razor sharp teeth called the "Bytclops", along with a sinister sounding "Shredder" to top it off.
Here's Ellie's Banjo-Kaghoulie story. Our apologies for posting it a bit late. It was saved in one of my e-mail files that I could not access until today.
Banjo-Kaghoulie by Ellie Coyle
It was a dark and stormy night and Banjo awoke to the crashing sound of thunder. He sat up and looked around, rubbing his eyes and letting out a loud yawn. He took in the empty room; something wasn’t quite, but he couldn’t put his finger on what it was. Looking around the room it suddenly dawned on him; Kazooie! She was not here! He jumped out of bed and checked the cold, dark house for his friend. He called out for her, but there was no reply. He made his way to the window, pulled back the curtain and peered out into the inky blackness. Rain drummed onto the window and Banjo found it very hard to make out anything in particular. Then, a flash of lightning lit up the area like a beacon. Standing right there at the window and peering in with grey lifeless eyes was some terrible bedraggled creature, its long chipped nails clawing at the glass. Banjo jumped back in terror, a loud “gwahhhh” filling the room. The room was plunged back into darkness as the lightning subsided and Banjo sat on the floor in a state of shock. What was that thing? And what had it done with Kazooie?
Banjo stood up and walked back to the window, raising one paw up to the curtain and fighting every urge he had to jump back into bed and hide under the covers. Pulling back the curtain all he could see was darkness, the sound of the rain pounding through his head. Was the creature still there? Had it gone? Lightning flashed again and Banjo recoiled through instinct but the creature was gone. Banjo sighed with relief but the elation at seeing the creature gone was replaced with a renewed panic – where exactly had it gone to? Fear filled him; maybe it had moved on to the front door, fumbling with the door knob right now? Or perhaps it was on the roof trying to get down the chimney? Banjo didn’t know what to do, where was Mumbo Jumbo when you needed him? He paced to and fro across the room trying to think of something – anything – to try and get himself out of this pickle … and then he heard knocking coming from the door. Banjo let out a scream and stood there wondering what to do. After a while he made his way to the door, trembling as he went. The knocking came again and Banjo let out another yelp. He reached out for the doorknob and twisted it gingerly. The door flew open and the creature came running in. Banjo screamed and dived onto his armchair. The creature stood over him, rain dripping off its dank and dirty body. The creature lifted its arm and Banjo let out another scream and covered his face with his paws.
“Banjo …” said the creature.
Banjo recognised that voice. He opened one eye and peered up at the creature. Looking down at him was Bottles the mole, a grey monster’s mask pulled up onto his forehead. He was rubbing rain out of his eyes with one gloved paw while the other was using his waistcoat to clean his glasses. “What are you doing?” he chuckled.
“What am I doing?” Banjo yelled, “What are you doing standing at my window in the dead of night with a monster’s costume on? You scared me to death.”
“I was trying it on to get ready for Halloween and came out to show you, but I tripped and fell in the mud. I couldn’t see anything and tried to get help from you. Some help you are hair brain!”
“Thank goodness,” sighed Banjo, “I thought Kazooie had been gobbled up by a ghoulie!”
Kazooie! If it hadn’t been a monster grabbing her in the night, where was she now? And then Banjo heard it. A low rumbling noise that came and went rhythmically every couple of seconds. It was fairly quiet at first but it was getting louder with each passing minute. What was that noise? It sounded vaguely familiar but he couldn’t put his finger on it. He walked around the room trying to work out where it was coming from and he followed his ears to the wardrobe. This was all very weird. He pulled the door of the wardrobe open and there, curled up at the bottom, was Kazooie snoring away with a pillow wrapped round her head. He prodded her with his paw and she coughed and spluttered and she woke up. Banjo couldn’t believe it. “Kazooie, what are you doing in there?”
Kazooie glared at him, “Urgh, what are you doing furball? I was sleeping!”
“Yes, but why are you in the wardrobe?”
“Can’t you hear that thunder?” exclaimed Kazooie, “I got in here to try and drone out the noise. I had finally gone off to sleep and you come waking me up, you big buffoon!”
Banjo rolled his eyes and let out a resigned sigh, “I’m going back to bed. Wake me when Halloween is over!”

To everyone else who entered thanks for having a go and stay tuned for more competitions in the future.
We hope you all had a spooktacular Halloween!

Happy Halloween from Rareware Archives!
|
Posted by: LerakoLanche @ 31/10/2011 10:27:21
As October draws to a close we're left to celebrate our most anticipated holiday of the lot; Halloween, the only day of the calendar year where you can dress up as Mr. Pants and appear normal!**
Akin to the other festivities and treats to be found today, we've managed to compile several bits of goodies that should set you in the right mood to party through the night and devour chocolate in the morn'.
If it's Rareware Halloween themed lists that you're developing a hankering for, look no further than our lengthy compilation on the Top 11 Best Rare Levels to Play on Halloween if you haven't given it a read through already.
If you have, why not treat the countdown like a checklist and play these timeless classics into the night?
Of course, you'll be fairly busy trying to escape a sinister mansion in the meanwhile, no - we're not talking about Grabbed by the Ghoulies, but rather the fourth (and self proclaimed best) rendition of Mad Monster Mansion: Choose Your Own Adventure that will have you deciding your own means of escape and ultimately your fate in this heart stopping tale as the gruesome reimagining from the classic level from Banjo-Kazooie.
What sort of Halloween would this possibly be without Trick R' Treating? Well, Rareware Archives has some treats for you (We're sure the tricks are buried somewhere) if you've managed to submit and entry for our suggestive Grab Our Ghoulies Competition which tasks you with either constructing a vile vehicle in Banjo-Kazooie: Nut's and Bolts that relates to Halloween, or writing us a spooky Rareware-themed story in order to win a copy of Grabbed by the Ghoulies for your Xbox 360!
Today is the last possible day that we're accepting submissions, so get those creative juices flowing and write us up something bonechilling, or grab a spanner and get Banjo to work on your creepy contraption before Midnight GMT to have a chance to Grab our Ghoulies.
If your submission manages to earn you a copy of Ghoulies, who's going to lead you by the hand through all 100 rooms to attain a perfect Super Scary score of 100/100? Rareware Archives that's who! After months of work, our rather excellent Grabbed by the Ghoulies Super Scary Score Walkthrough goes live the day of Halloween - which we're going to play it off as if we planned it rather than the freak coincidence that it was. This indepth Ghoulies Guide details the best routes and key strategies that will make the most out this Haunted House romp, rather than sending Cooper into a wall for an hour or whatever you do left to your own devices...
However you choose to spend it, we hope that you throughly enjoy your Halloween as we work our way into November.
Happy Halloween Rareware Archives!
** Unless you live in Bristol of course, where underpants and bowler caps are part of national dress.

Steve Burke talks Fusion: Genesis
|
Posted by: Paul @ 28/10/2011 09:42:15
Ex-Rare music maestro Steve Burke (he of Kameo: Elements of Power fame) has been speaking to www.scorenotes.com about his work on the new Starfire Studios game, Fusion: Genesis. It’s a really interesting read and well worth a look. You will also find links to the full soundtrack that you can download for free! Personally the first thing I’m going to do when I get home this evening is putting that baby on my iPod. Steve’s work is consistently fantastic and I just know that the soundtrack for Fusion: Genesis is going to be awesome.
Fusion: Genesis is scheduled to be launched on Xbox Live Arcade later this year.

After nearly a year of development from Rare and BigPark today sees the release of Kinect Sports: Season Two in America. If you find yourself in the likes of Australia, you'll have to wait until Thursday to get your hands on a copy, and the Brits will have to wait just a day after to receive their copies on the 28th. Rare has done us all a favor by including the official spiel on their site which details new fangled entries to the series like Challenge Play, Calorie Counters and other such fun and frivolity.

Cranky returns to answer your questions
|
Posted by: Paul @ 17/10/2011 15:46:27
“What’s that coming over the hill? Is it a monster? Is it a monster?” So goes that famous (and slightly annoying) tune but ... er, no ... that hunched-over mass shuffling towards us is not some kind of zombie creature as we initially feared, it turns out to be our good friend Cranky Kong - cane in one hand and a bundle of e-mails in the other - and he’s here to answer your letters, grumbling all the while.
